The health situation in Mweka, Kasaï (DRC) is deteriorating rapidly following a confirmed Ebola outbreak. According to local health officials, 33 cases have been identified, including 16 fatalities, marking a high fatality rate of nearly 50%.
Authorities fear an escalation as many residents have fled into the bush, complicating contact tracing and increasing the risk of wider transmission. A mobile laboratory from the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB) has been deployed to the Bulape General Hospital to strengthen testing and containment efforts.
Two of the four health zones in Mweka are already affected. In response, local authorities have announced partial lockdown measures, school closures, and a ban on public gatherings.
The situation is critical: if not contained quickly, this outbreak could spread beyond the territory.
